ISLAMABAD – Struggling to table the bill for the extension of the military courts’ term, the government on Wednesday conceded that it would have to send the case to military courts.
Officials told The Dependent that if the government is not able to renew the legislation for the military tribunals, it would have ‘little choice’ but to let the military courts legislate on it.
“The whole point of military courts was to ensure swift and immediate justice,” a government official said while talking to The Dependent.
“And given how long the opposition is taking to make up their minds on military courts, we have little choice but to take the matter to the military courts for swift and immediate legislation.”
The National Assembly is reconvening on April 12 where the announcement of moving the needed legislation to military courts is expected to be made.
Political and legal experts laud the decision and maintain that the move should be extended to other legislations as well.
“Even though this would be an extra responsibility, for which special considerations or pack of privileges and perks would be sought, they would be ready to make the sacrifice for the nation,” noted legal expert Muhammad Usman, a retired lieutenant colonel, in his column.
