Plea seeks registration of case against Hashmi over anti-army tirade

LAHORE: A day after his controversial speech targeting state institutions, an application seeking the registration of a case against former senator Nehal Hashmi was filed at a police station here on Saturday.

“Nehal Hashmi had been convicted in a contempt of court case earlier this year and has once again uttered unkind remarks about esteemed state institutions,” the plea stated.

On Friday, Hashmi, in his speech, had vehemently criticised state institutions, including the army.

Reacting to Hashmi’s statement, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Rana Sanaullah had said that Hashmi was expelled from the party so an action could not be taken against him by the PML-N.

Speaking to media representatives, Sanaullah had said that Hashmi was sacked after he had refused to leave senatorship on party orders after a similar statement targeting judiciary.

He had also said that one could disagree with institutions, but what Hashmi did was not the way to register a protest.
