SC gives clean chit to Saad Rafique after 5 years

LAHORE: The Supreme Court (SC) on Thursday accepted Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Khawaja Saad Rafique’s appeal against an election tribunal which had declared poll results in NA-125 during the 2013 general elections null and void and ordered by-election in the constituency.

Ruling in favour of the former railways minister, a two-member bench of the apex court’s Lahore Registry annulled the decision by the election tribunal in a case pertaining to alleged rigging in the NA-125 constituency during the 2013 general election.

After a defeat in 2013 elections in the said constituency, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) candidate Hamid Khan had filed an application in the election tribunal levelling allegations of rigging against the former federal minister.

Disqualifying Rafique, the tribunal had ordered by-election in NA-125 and barred the former minister from contesting in the constituency, following which the PML-N leader had approached the SC to appeal against the decision.
