Czech chemical plant blast kills at least 6

An explosion at a chemical plant in the northern region of the Czech Republic on Thursday has killed at least six people and injured several others, local news agency CTK reported.

“We have received information about six dead and several others seriously injured,” the CTK quoted regional firefighter spokeswoman Vladimira Kerekova as saying.

Two people have been taken to the hospital, she said.

A spokesman for Unipetrol, the company that owns the plant, also confirmed the incident, which occurred at around 10 a.m. local time (0900 GMT) in the town of Kralupy nad Vltavou, 30 km (19 miles) northwest of the capital Prague.

There was no risk of further explosions, reports said.

Local authorities said they have launched an investigation to determine the cause.
