Khawaja Asif says there is trust deficit between Pakistan and US

ISLAMABAD: Foreign Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif has said that there is a trust deficit between Pakistan and the United States, adding that Islamabad wants to have good relations with Washington on equality basis.

“Pakistan will never compromise on national interest and dignity of the country,” the minister stressed.

In an interview, he said Pakistan has been providing support to the US in the Afghan war and it will continue extending cooperation for peace in Afghanistan.

He went on to say that Pakistan’s relations with Russia are improving due to the government’s effective foreign policy.

After tensions between Pakistan and the US escalated over former’s inaction against terror networks, Washington persuaded member states of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) to place Pakistan back on the “grey list” of nations with inadequate terrorist financing or money laundering controls. Pakistan was on the list for three years from 2012.

After a week of perpetual uncertainty regarding Pakistan’s placement on the FATF list pertaining to terror financing and money laundering, Foreign Office Spokesperson Muhammad Faisal last month confirmed that the country will be added to the watchlist in June.
