PPP govt actively empowering women: information minister

KARACHI: Sindh Information Minister Syed Nasir Hussain Shah said on Wednesday that the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) government had initiated multiple programmes for women empowerment under the visions of Shaheed Mohatarma Benazir Bhutto and PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari.

He was speaking at a gathering of an initiative, aimed at providing soft skills and vocational training, organised jointly by the Paxi Pink Taxi Service, Institute of Advancing Career and Talents (IACT) and Habib Foundation at Saudabad.

“The Sindh government has taken concrete and targeted steps to empower women at different levels in all sectors,” the information minister said.

He appreciated the Paxi Pink Taxi Service and said that the service would be extended to all other areas of Sindh also, down to the district levels. He added that the government would facilitate all such companies as are working to launch modern transport facilities.

He said that the Paxi project, with its fleet of taxis driven by educated women drivers, was a practical step toward empowering women.

Other participants in the conference included Paxi Pink Taxi Service Chief Executive Officer Sheikh Muhammad Zahid, Chief Operating Officer Arif Khan, IAACT projects head Faheem Bokhari, Paxi’s first woman driver Kiran Rao and Pakistan Blind Sports Association President Salman Elahi. These participants highlighted the salient features of the one and a half month training provided to Paxi’s women drivers including life skills, personality development, customer services, personality grooming, English language skills and first aid techniques.

Paxi and Sindh government have also signed memoranda of understanding (MoU) to extend such services and launch more projects across the province.
