- Akbar Ali gets first position in veteran category
LAHORE: Senior golfer Muhammad Iqbal won for the fourth time the ninth edition of Syed Manzoor Hussain Memorial Golf Championship title at the Lahore Gymkhana here on Monday.
This event is hosted annually by Syed Shaghil Husain in memory of his late father Syed Manzoor Hussain who was an eminent golfer and played this sport at the Lahore Gymkhana for over 50 years.
The aim of organising this event is to recognise the contributions of senior golf professionals who have devoted their lives in promotion of this sport with minimal recognition or reward in their later years. This year, nearly 50 veteran and senior professionals, amateurs and ladies participated in the match, played over 18 holes.
After an exciting game, which resulted in a three-way tie, Muhammad Iqbal won the trophy in second play-off hole with a score of 73 by chipping in his second shot on Par 3 ninth hole. Muhammad Ilyas and Iftikhar Ahmed took second position with identical score of 73.
In the veteran category, Akbar Ali got first position with a score of 36. In amateur category, Ahmad Zafar won the first gross prize with a score of 74 while Nasir Irshad was runner up with a score of 77. Tariq Mehmood with net score of 70 won the first net prize while Mian Javed with net 72 was second.
Samia Javed with a net score of 76 was a winner among ladies. In the end, cash prizes and souvenirs were presented to the participants by Gymkhana’s Golf Committee Convener Shaukat Javed, Pervaiz Saeed, Zille Huma, and Syed Shaghil Husain. The entire event was befittingly organised by Syed M Mazhar, a retired colonel of the Pakistan Army.
