Imran flays Nawaz for ‘non-democratic mindset’

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan on Saturday criticised Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif for what he called his “non-democratic mindset”.

In reaction to prime minister’s Friday speech, on occasion of the inauguration of a power project, the PTI chief, in multiple tweets, said that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s non-democratic mindset revealed itself once again when he declared people would do his ehtesab (accountability).

He opined that this twisted logic was a negation of democracy.

He added that people elected their representatives, expecting them to be accountable before the law. Imran said that people did not expect those they elected to abuse the law with impunity.

The cricketer-turned-politician said that both Islamic and Western democratic traditions upheld the norm of all being accountable and equal before law of the land.

“Nawaz Sharif whining about development being impeded because he was being investigated for corruption should know development is damaged because of corruption,” he added.

PTI chief said that development only happens when institutions were strong and government/leaders were clean and accountable before law of the land.

“Elections were a central pivot of democracy but so are rule of law and accountability, including the elected representatives,” he added.

It is to be mentioned here that PM Nawaz had criticised his opponents, especially PTI, accusing them of impeding development and progress.
