Sartaj Aziz ‘s statement on General (R) Raheel Sharif speaks volume about the government’s ineffective control over the foreign policy matters. The controversial appointment of General Sharif to head the Saudi led united armed forces alliance was made unilaterally.
The matter should have been discussed & debated in the Parliament. Sartaj Aziz says that the government cannot ask the General (R) Sharif to come back. In other words it is the General’s prerogative to resign or hold on to such a lucrative position. The other consideration is that relations with Saudi Arabia  will become estranged.
The no nonsense politics will replace the current stagnant compromising policies. The change in power structure of Saudi Arabia may escalate tension between Saudis & Iranian administrations. The influence of Saudis  will be expanded in Afghanistan causing ripple effects in the South Asian Region.
In my opinion General (R) Sharif must resign and leave the coveted post in the best interest of the nation
