Pakistan opens Torkham border for 2 days

Pakistan has temporarily opened border crossings at Torkham and Chaman for two days for pedestrians to return to their homeland, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) said on Monday.

A MoFA press release said that the border has been opened, “in order to provide an opportunity to those nationals of Afghanistan who had come to Pakistan on valid visas and wish to return to their country.”

This will also allow Pakistanis with valid visas to return to their country as well, the Foreign Office said.

“All concerned at the two crossing points have also been informed, the FO statement added.

However, Pakistan and Afghanistan have still not reached an agreement on permanently reopening the borders, according to Zakhilwal, in a Facebook post in his native language. All trade activities between the two countries are also still discontinued.

Pakistan has been accusing Afghanistan of not doing enough to prevent the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) from using Afghan territory as a safe haven while repeatedly emphasising that the unregulated Torkham border is being used by the Afghan militants to enter and cause havoc in Pakistan.

There have been violent clashes on the borders of late, due to rising tensions between the countries over this issue.
