Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif on Tuesday said that Punjab government is spending billions of rupees on development of the health sector and provision of treatment facilities to the masses.

Presiding over a meeting to review the progress of Rawalpindi Institute of Cardiology (RIC), he said that in order to meet the needs of citizens, projects were being completed expeditiously. He added that Rawalpindi Institute of Cardiology would be made fully functional by December 25.

He further said that treatments at the institute would be free of cost for the patients of Rawalpindi, Azad Kashmir and adjoining areas. He said that the hospital would be run as an autonomous institution and necessary legislation was being undertaken for this purpose.

Setting up a committee headed by Special Assistant Khawaja Salman Rafique, Shahbaz said that the committee would prepare the draft of the law for granting an autonomous status to the hospital and submit recommendations for the posts required for the hospital. The CM also said that a large portion of government funds had been released for provision of free medicines to patients from under-developed areas.
