Supreme Court Bar Association President Asma Jahangir on Saturday regretted the tone of the ISPR against the allegations regarding the murder of journalist Saleem Shahzad. The SCBA president said she had only restated the allegations carried by the media.

According to a press release issued on Saturday, Asma said the warnings from the ISPR to desist her from expressing these allegations were in fact interference in her professional responsibilities. She said allegations against certain security institutions were legitimately made in courts and investigated or defended in courts and she had restated the same without adding anything from herself.

Asma said perhaps “the ISPR is unaware that reports of erasing of Syed Saleem Shahzad’s phone records appeared in the press and were not denied by anyone. These allegations were brought to the notice of the court accordingly”. She said lawyers could not be expected to investigate the allegations and under no circumstances should they first get clearance from the ISPR before placing such allegations before the court.

However, the SCBA president welcomed the approach of the ISPR in accepting the need for an independent commission on murder of Saleem Shahzad.
