NEW YORK: New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani has acknowledged that he would not have the authority to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu despite the International Criminal Court's arrest warrant.
Mamdani made the remarks while responding to questions about his earlier comments regarding the ICC warrant and how he would act if Netanyahu visited New York.
He said the authority to execute international arrest warrants does not rest with the city's mayor, clarifying that such matters fall under the jurisdiction of federal authorities and the relevant law enforcement agencies.
The comments come after Mamdani faced scrutiny over previous statements suggesting that Netanyahu could face arrest if he entered the city.
The ICC issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu and former Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant last year over alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity related to the conflict in Gaza. Both Israeli leaders have rejected the allegations, while Israel disputes the court's jurisdiction.
