Rubio says Trump’s Iran policy is ‘a head for an eye’

MANILA: US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has said President Donald Trump’s approach towards Iran is “a head for an eye”, signalling a tougher stance as tensions between Washington and Tehran continue to escalate.

Speaking on the sidelines of the ASEAN foreign ministers’ meeting in Manila, Rubio was responding to Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi’s warning that Tehran would follow an “eye for an eye” policy if the United States targeted Iranian infrastructure.

Rubio said Iran would continue to pay a “very heavy price” for its actions, adding that the country had already suffered extensive damage to its military and industrial capabilities during the ongoing US campaign.

He also claimed that Iran was sending messages through intermediary countries seeking negotiations with Washington, but questioned Tehran’s willingness to honour any future agreement, saying it had repeatedly attempted to change the terms of previous understandings.

Rubio reiterated that the United States is not seeking regime change in Iran but wants to ensure the country never acquires a nuclear weapon. He also warned that any attempt by Iran-backed Houthi rebels to disrupt international shipping would have serious consequences.
