Houston designates July 21, 2026 as Muhammad Saeed Sheikh Day

HOUSTON: The City of Houston has designated July 21, 2026, as Muhammad Saeed Sheikh Day, with Mayor John Whitmire announcing the proclamation at a ceremony held to recognise the Pakistani-American community leader’s decades of humanitarian and civic work.

The event was organised jointly by the Consulate General of Pakistan in Houston and the Houston Karachi Sister City Association. It brought together Pakistani-American community members, business figures and civic representatives to mark Sheikh’s more than 40 years of public service.

Whitmire also commended Sheikh after his recent conferment of Pakistan’s Sitara-e-Khidmat, or Star of Service, which is among the country’s highest civilian honours. The mayor thanked President Asif Ali Zardari for bestowing the award and said Sheikh had spent the past four decades serving people without regard to their background, presenting his work as an example of civic responsibility and public service.

The proclamation issued by the mayor’s office cites Sheikh’s long-running humanitarian efforts, civic role and work to deepen friendship and understanding between Pakistan and the United States.

Community recognition and official remarks

During the gathering, prominent Pakistani-American businessman Syed Javed Anwar said Sheikh had devoted many years to the service of humanity without seeking acclaim, and described him as a worthy recipient of one of Pakistan’s top civilian awards.

Pakistan’s Consul General in Houston, Aftab Chaudhry, said Sheikh’s efforts in both the United States and Pakistan had set an example in community service. He added that the honour was a matter of pride not only for Sheikh personally but also for the broader Pakistani-American community.

Whitmire also said he planned to visit Pakistan in his second term as mayor in order to promote people-to-people links and broader cooperation between the United States and Pakistan.

Sheikh credits community support

In his remarks, Sheikh thanked the Government of Pakistan, President Asif Ali Zardari, the Consulate General of Pakistan, members of the community and the organisers of the ceremony. He said the recognition should be shared with those who had stood with him throughout his humanitarian work over the years.

Sheikh said the award reflected a wider collective effort and specifically acknowledged support from Syed Javed Anwar.

“This award represents the collective efforts of our entire community,” Sheikh said. “Many individuals stood beside me — not only through financial support but by working with me at every stage of our humanitarian initiatives. Among them, Syed Javed Anwar has been one of the foremost supporters. This recognition belongs to all of them as much as it belongs to me.”
