NEW YORK: New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani attended an Ashura majlis in New York, joining mourners to commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Hussein ibn Ali (RA) and emphasising the values of justice, sacrifice and compassion.
Addressing participants, Mamdani said the tragedy of Karbala continues to inspire people across generations to stand against injustice and uphold truth, describing Imam Hussein's (RA) legacy as a timeless symbol of courage and moral leadership.
The mayor also acknowledged the contributions of the city's Muslim community and highlighted New York's diversity, saying people of different faiths and backgrounds strengthen the city through mutual respect and shared values.
The gathering was attended by members of the Shia Muslim community, who observed Ashura through sermons, recitations and mourning rituals.
Ashura, observed on the 10th of Muharram, marks the martyrdom of Imam Hussein (RA), the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), in the Battle of Karbala in 680 AD. Millions of Muslims around the world commemorate the day each year through religious gatherings and processions.
Mamdani's participation in the majlis was widely shared on social media, with many praising his gesture of solidarity with the Muslim community.
