ISLAMABAD: Gilgit-Baltistan Chief Election Commissioner Raja Shahbaz Khan announced on Wednesday that the region’s long-delayed local government elections will be held on August 2.
The polls had been announced after a gap of more than 20 years and were earlier scheduled for February 14, 2026. General elections for the Gilgit-Baltistan legislative assembly had also been fixed for January 24, 2026.
However, both the assembly and local government elections were postponed indefinitely days after the announcements because of severe weather conditions in the region.
Earlier this month, Khan had said the Gilgit-Baltistan Election Commission was making preparations to conduct the elections, but no date had been finalised at that stage.
