Teenage boy dies of rabies in Karachi despite prior vaccination
A 13-year-old boy died of rabies at Karachi’s JPMC after being brought in on May 26, according to a senior hospital official. The doctor said the child had received a full course of vaccination after a stray dog bite about three months earlier.
KARACHI: A 13-year-old boy died of rabies at the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre despite having been vaccinated after a stray dog bite about three months earlier, a senior doctor at the hospital said on Sunday.
Dr Irfan Siddiqi, who heads the emergency department at JPMC, said the boy was brought to the hospital on May 26 at around 11am. According to him, the child had been bitten by a stray dog around three months before and had received a complete course of immunisation at Abbasi Shaheed Hospital.
Dr Siddiqi said the patient was suffering from fever for 10 days, fits for one day and irritability when he arrived at JPMC. He was admitted to the neuromedical ward, where he died during treatment at 3:30pm the same day.
The doctor also said the boy was a labourer by profession.
