PM Shehbaz praises Trump’s 'extraordinary efforts to pursue peace' after regional leaders’ call

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Sunday commended United States President Donald Trump for what he described as his extraordinary efforts to advance peace, following a multi-country phone call on the regional situation in which Pakistan was represented by Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir.

In a post on X, the prime minister said the conversation brought together representatives and leaders from Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Turkiye, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Jordan and Pakistan. He said Field Marshal Munir took part in the call on Pakistan’s behalf and also acknowledged his role in the ongoing diplomatic process.

Shehbaz said the exchange allowed participants to review the prevailing regional situation and discuss ways to carry forward efforts aimed at securing durable peace. He also said Pakistan remained committed to continuing its peace efforts with complete sincerity.

Referring to the army chief, the prime minister appreciated his role during the process and said the engagement had been constructive for all sides involved.

The premier said Pakistan was hopeful of hosting another round of talks between the United States and Iran in the near future, indicating Islamabad’s continued involvement in mediation efforts linked to the crisis.

Attributing the remarks to his social media statement, Shehbaz said the latest diplomatic contact was useful in helping participating countries exchange views on the way forward. “The discussions provided a useful opportunity to exchange views on the current regional situation and how to move the ongoing peace efforts forward to bring lasting peace in the region,” he said.

He added that Pakistan intended to remain engaged in the process and expressed hope that the next phase of US-Iran negotiations could also be held in the country. “Pakistan will continue its peace efforts with utmost sincerity and we hope to host the next round of US-Iran talks in Pakistan soon,” he said.

Pakistan representation in the call

According to the prime minister’s post, Pakistan was represented in the call by Field Marshal Asim Munir in his capacity as Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff. Shehbaz also praised his efforts during the peace process.

The development comes amid continued diplomatic engagement involving regional states and international actors over the current crisis. The prime minister’s statement did not provide further operational details of the call beyond identifying the participating countries and describing the discussion as productive.
