Minor boy dies after DHA road accident in Karachi

KARACHI: A minor boy died after a road accident in Karachi’s Defence Housing Authority area on Saturday, where a bus ran over him after the motorcycle he was riding on collided with a rickshaw, officials said.

According to the details shared by officials, an underage motorcyclist was riding with a 12-year-old pillion rider when the motorcycle was being driven recklessly and had reportedly crossed a traffic signal in violation before hitting a rickshaw. After the collision, both boys fell onto the road.

Officials said a passing red bus then ran over the pillion rider before the driver brought the vehicle to a stop. The injured boy was shifted by ambulance to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, where he later died during treatment.

The motorcycle rider fled the scene, while police took the bus driver into custody and impounded the vehicle at the Defence police station.

Police account of the accident

In a statement, traffic police said the likely cause of the fatal incident appeared to be reckless and negligent driving by the underage motorcyclist. The statement indicated that the motorcycle had struck the rickshaw after the traffic signal violation, leading to both riders falling onto the main road.

The case drew attention to the involvement of underage riders in traffic accidents, with officials specifically identifying the motorcyclist as a minor. The deceased was the pillion rider, who was stated to be 12 years old.

An Edhi Foundation spokesperson said the identity of the deceased boy could not be established until late at night.

The incident occurred in the DHA area of Karachi and was reported by officials on Saturday. Police and traffic authorities provided the initial account of the sequence of events, while rescue arrangements led to the victim being transported to hospital after the accident.

The bus involved in the incident was described by officials as a red bus. After the accident, law enforcement authorities moved the vehicle to the Defence police station as part of the case proceedings.
