KARACHI: A motorcycle was allegedly stolen from inside the premises of Preedy police station in Karachi, in an incident that has raised fresh concerns about security arrangements at a facility meant to provide protection and receive public complaints.

The incident involved a citizen, Haider Ali, who had gone to the police station to seek legal action after what he described as an attempted digital fraud.

Complaint visit followed by theft

Haider Ali said he had visited Saddar Mobile Market on April 20 to buy a mobile phone when he was allegedly targeted in a digital fraud attempt. He then went to Preedy police station at around 9:20pm to lodge a complaint about the matter.

Ali said he informed the officer on duty about the incident, but was told to return the next day to formally register his complaint. He said that after waiting for a short time inside the station, he stepped outside at about 9:30pm and discovered that his motorcycle was missing.

According to Ali, the motorcycle had been parked within the police station compound. He said the spot was covered by several CCTV cameras and was directly in front of the surveillance control room that monitors the Saddar area.

Questions over security

The reported theft from within a police station has added to concerns over policing and security standards in Karachi, where street crime has remained a persistent public concern. The incident has drawn attention because the alleged theft took place inside a police facility rather than on a public road or in an open market area.

The case has prompted questions about how a vehicle could be removed from a monitored section of the station premises. It also highlighted concerns over the effectiveness of security measures at a location equipped with surveillance cameras and tasked with overseeing law and order in a busy part of the city.

Ali had gone to the station in connection with a cybercrime-related complaint, but instead ended up reporting the disappearance of his motorcycle from the station itself. The incident, as described in the report, has become a striking example of the security challenges facing citizens even when they approach law enforcement for help.
