Father held in alleged killing of teenage daughter

RAWALPINDI: A 16-year-old girl was allegedly shot dead by her father in Dhoke Noor, an area within the limits of Wah Cantt police station, in what police described as an honour-related killing.

According to police, City Police Officer Rawalpindi Khalid Hamdani took notice of the incident, and a case was registered on the complaint of the state.

Police said ASI Yasir Arafat stated that he was on duty with his team when they heard gunfire coming from the Bhalsair Road side. When officers reached the area, they saw a man running away from the scene, while cries and screams were also heard after the firing.

A young man present there told police that Anwar Khan had allegedly shot and killed his daughter, identified as 16-year-old Kanza, in the name of honour, according to the police account.

Investigators then entered the house, where they found Kanza’s body lying in a room of the residence. Police said family members told investigators that the girl had been in contact with a man identified as Maaz Khan through a mobile phone and that disputes had previously taken place in the home over the matter.

According to police, Anwar Khan allegedly opened fire on Kanza in anger and resentment over the issue before fleeing the scene.

Police collected evidence from the crime scene and shifted the body for a postmortem examination. A case has been registered against the suspect father.

Police teams formed to arrest suspect

Police officials said that on the directions of CPO Khalid Hamdani, Potohar SP Sardar Babar Mumtaz formed teams to arrest the suspect, and raids are under way.

The incident took place in Dhoke Noor in Rawalpindi district, with the investigation proceeding under Wah Cantt police station.

Police have so far said that the case was lodged after the state became the complainant and that efforts are continuing to trace and arrest the accused.

Authorities have also said that evidence was secured from the house after the shooting and the body was sent for medico-legal formalities.
