New WhatsApp feature could auto-delete messages once they’re read

WhatsApp is working on a new privacy feature that could change how disappearing messages function on the platform.
The update introduces what’s being called an “after reading” timer — a system where messages begin disappearing only once the recipient has opened and read them. This marks a shift from the current disappearing messages feature, where the countdown starts immediately after sending, regardless of whether the message has been seen.
With this change, users would have more precise control over how long their messages remain visible. Early reports suggest options could range from a few minutes to several hours after being read, depending on user preference.
The feature is currently being tested in beta versions of the app, where it appears alongside improved controls and a more streamlined interface aimed at making privacy settings easier to manage.
If rolled out, the update could be particularly useful for sharing sensitive or time-specific information, ensuring that messages don’t linger unnecessarily after being viewed.
While there is no confirmed release date yet, the feature signals WhatsApp’s continued focus on giving users more control over their conversations — especially when it comes to privacy and message visibility.
