Three killed, 14 injured in rain-related incidents across KP

PESHAWAR: At least three people were killed and 14 others were injured in rain-related incidents in Peshawar, Mohmand and Nowshera on Wednesday, while rescue teams evacuated 120 people from two inundated localities on the outskirts of the provincial capital.

Rescue 1122 spokesperson Bilal Ahmad Faizi said people stranded in rainwater were rescued from Mian Gujjar and Islamabad Korona near Peshawar. He said a child died in the Mattani area after a roof collapsed, while two other people were injured and shifted to hospital by rescue workers.

Faizi also said another roof collapse in Rahimabad in Nowshera district injured three members of a family. He said two children and a woman were moved to Pabbi hospital after receiving initial treatment.

In Mohmand district, two people lost their lives and nine others were injured in separate incidents linked to the heavy rain. In Shaheed Banda in Pindiali tehsil, a girl died when a room in her house caved in. In Karari in Ekkaghund tehsil, five people were injured in a similar incident. The injured were identified as Naiz Ali, Asim Khan, Sabhat, Mustafa and Haleema.

Another fatality was reported from Sra Khawa in Baizai subdivision, where Mohammadullah died after a room he was in collapsed during the downpour.

Rescue officials also said four people were injured in a roof collapse in Dawezai Dawat Kor in tehsil Pindiali on April 8. The injured were identified as Jan Sher, 30, his 28-year-old wife, Najeeb, 28, and Khairullah, 4. Rescue 1122 spokesperson Abdullah Mohmand said rescue teams acted quickly to pull all victims from the debris and provide immediate medical care.

Record rainfall and damage in Mohmand

Officials told Dawn that Mohmand district had received 151 millimetres of rain in 2026, exceeding the previous record of 134mm set in 2013. Meteorologists described the rainfall as a rare and significant climatic event for the area.

The continuing rain flooded low-lying areas and seasonal waterways, while lower temperatures worsened conditions. Hundreds of houses and boundary walls were either destroyed or damaged, displacing families. Roads in several tehsils were washed away, cutting off communities and making rescue work more difficult.

Rain-related incidents also killed livestock and damaged standing crops, causing major financial losses to local residents. Several dams, including Abdul Shakoor, Jai, Khurshid, Moto Shah and Aqrab Dag, have reached full capacity, prompting concerns about downstream flooding.

To deal with the situation, the district administration has set up a round-the-clock District Control Room at the deputy commissioner’s office.

Disruptions in Swabi and Bajaur

Torrential rain over the last two days also disrupted daily life in Swabi district, where main bazaars and low-lying areas were submerged. Residents said drains in Swabi city and other areas were clogged, causing rainwater to flow onto major roads and creating difficulties for motorists and pedestrians.

Karnal Sher Khan Chowk in the district headquarters was flooded, and residents criticised the TMA over its performance. In Topi tehsil, rainwater entered shops in the main market and blocked Tarbela-Topi Road for several hours, forcing transporters and commuters to wait until the water level dropped.

Flooding also affected Meena Bazaar, Raja Bazaar and Old Bazaar in Topi, with water flowing over the main Tarbela-Topi Road. Residents said drains had not been cleaned by the TMA for years. Similar conditions were reported in Chota Lahor tehsil and at Shewa Adda, the headquarters of Razaar tehsil, where residents called for immediate action by the authorities.

Traders blamed the situation on what they called the negligence of the PTI government during its 13 years in power. Swabi City Traders president Yasir Khan told Dawn that drains in the district headquarters were blocked and alleged that TMA workers only visited traders to collect taxes. "We have raised the issue of blocked drains with the relevant officer several times, but he’s not ready to listen," he said.

In Bajaur district, Rescue 1122 officials said three people were injured when the roof of a house collapsed in the Zara Shah Mandal area after two days of heavy rain. They said all the injured were in stable condition at the district headquarters hospital.

The officials said the rain continued until Wednesday afternoon, causing several mud houses to collapse or sustain damage in Khar, Mamund, Salarzai and Barang tehsils, though no additional deaths were reported. Floodwater also triggered a landslide in Barang tehsil, blocking the main Khar-Barang Road.

In a statement, Deputy Commissioner Shahid Ali Khan said a joint team from the roads and highways department and the TMA was clearing debris from the road with the help of tractors.
