KARACHI: Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon on Wednesday announced a Rs35 billion relief package to support the public amid rising petroleum prices, attributing the fuel increase to the ongoing war-like situation in the region.
Speaking to reporters, Memon said a high-level meeting chaired jointly by President Asif Ali Zardari and the Prime Minister, with participation from all provincial chief ministers, led to coordinated decisions to address the situation.
Under the Sindh relief package, priority has been given to small farmers. Farmers owning less than 25 acres of land will receive Rs1,500 per acre, with disbursements already underway through a designated bank, the minister added.
Motorcyclists will also benefit from the scheme. Sindh has around 6.7 million registered motorcycles, and their owners are set to receive a monthly subsidy of Rs2,000. To encourage regularisation of vehicle ownership, transfer fees have been waived for motorcycles not registered in the owner’s name.
Memon said the provincial government is committed to easing the financial burden on citizens caused by the federal fuel price adjustments, which have significantly impacted transport costs and agricultural operations.
The relief package aims to provide immediate financial support to the most affected segments of the population, particularly small-scale farmers and daily commuters relying on motorcycles for transport.
Officials noted that the subsidy for motorcyclists will be credited directly to verified bank accounts, ensuring a streamlined and transparent distribution process.
