Government plans digital fuel quota system for private vehicles

ISLAMABAD: The federal government has decided to introduce a digital fuel management system at petrol pumps across the country, under which a petrol quota will be set for private vehicles.

The move is part of contingency planning in view of the ongoing war in the Middle East, with authorities preparing measures to deal with any possible disruption in petroleum supplies.

Under the proposed arrangement, petrol stations will be fitted with digital tools to manage fuel distribution. Citizens will be assigned a fixed fuel quota for personal vehicles through the system.

Testing completed

The Ministry of Information Technology has completed testing of the mobile phones that are to be deployed at petrol pumps for the new mechanism.

An application developed for fuel management has also been tested successfully.

The Ministry of IT has sent complete details of the project to the Cabinet Division for final approval.

Contingency planning

The planned system comes as the government reviews steps to manage the impact of any fuel supply disruption linked to the conflict in the Middle East. The proposed quota mechanism is intended for private vehicles and would be implemented through a digital setup at fuel stations nationwide.
