Pakistan marks Pakistan Day without parade amid Middle East-linked austerity measures

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan observed its national day on March 23 without the traditional military parade, as the government opted for austerity measures linked to the ongoing situation in the Middle East.

Gun salutes and ceremonies across the country

Gun salutes were fired across major cities to mark Pakistan Day, while a change of guard ceremony was held at the mausoleum of Allama Iqbal in Lahore, where a Pakistan Air Force contingent took over ceremonial duties.

The absence of the annual military parade — typically a centrepiece of Pakistan Day celebrations featuring armed forces displays, military hardware, and flyovers — was notable this year. The decision to forgo the parade was part of broader austerity measures adopted by the government in connection with developments in the Middle East.

Leaders call for unity and resilience

National leaders used the occasion to emphasise the importance of unity and resilience among the people of Pakistan. Messages from the country's leadership underscored the significance of the day, which commemorates the passage of the Lahore Resolution on March 23, 1940 — a landmark moment that paved the way for the creation of Pakistan.

The day holds deep historical importance as it marks the occasion when the All-India Muslim League formally demanded a separate homeland for the Muslims of the Indian subcontinent. Each year, Pakistan Day is observed with national fervour, featuring flag-hoisting ceremonies, cultural events, and military displays.

This year, however, the celebrations were scaled back considerably, with the government citing the need for fiscal prudence amid the challenges posed by the Middle East situation. The decision to cancel the parade reflected the administration's broader push to curtail expenditure on large-scale public events.

Despite the absence of the traditional parade, ceremonies and events were held across the country to honour the day's significance. Citizens participated in flag-hoisting events and other commemorative activities in various cities and towns.

The change of guard ceremony at Allama Iqbal's mausoleum in Lahore served as one of the key official events of the day, with the Pakistan Air Force contingent assuming guard duties at the revered site in a solemn and dignified ceremony.

Leaders from across the political spectrum reiterated calls for national solidarity, urging the people to uphold the ideals that led to the creation of Pakistan and to work collectively towards the country's progress and prosperity.
