Punjab cabinet approves purchase of 10 vehicles for superior court judges

LAHORE: The Punjab cabinet has given approval for the procurement of 10 vehicles designated for the superior judiciary, following recommendations from the cabinet committee and the Services and General Administration Department’s transport wing. The decision was made during a cabinet meeting held on Monday, chaired by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz. Ministers and officials participated in the session remotely as part of the provincial government’s ongoing austerity measures.

According to official details, the cabinet committee and the transport wing had initially suggested the purchase of at least 108 new luxury vehicles for cabinet members and bureaucrats, with an estimated cost of Rs1.14 billion for the current financial year. However, the cabinet opted to approve only the acquisition of 10 vehicles for the higher judiciary, scaling back the original proposal significantly.

In addition to the vehicle procurement decision, the Punjab government announced that members of the provincial cabinet, special assistants, and parliamentary secretaries will contribute two months’ worth of their salaries to the Prime Minister’s austerity fund. The Punjab Assembly is also set to participate in the austerity initiative, with members voluntarily donating two months’ salaries and 25 percent of their allowances to support the campaign.

The measures are part of a broader effort by the Punjab government to promote fiscal discipline and reduce unnecessary expenditures. The cabinet meeting, conducted via remote participation, underscores the administration’s commitment to cost-saving strategies and responsible governance.

Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz emphasized the importance of these steps in aligning with the federal government’s austerity objectives and ensuring that public resources are utilized efficiently. The approved purchase of vehicles is limited exclusively to the superior judiciary, reflecting a targeted approach to meeting essential needs while curbing overall spending.
