RAWALPINDI: The annual tradition of returning home for Eid has become increasingly difficult for many Rawalpindi residents this year, as significant increases in transport fares have disrupted travel plans for numerous passengers, particularly migrant workers.
According to a report, the surge in ticket prices for buses and other modes of public transport has placed a heavy financial burden on those wishing to reunite with their families for the Eid holidays. Many daily wage earners and low-income workers, who typically make the journey to their hometowns during this period, have been forced to reconsider or abandon their plans due to the unaffordable costs.
Passengers at Rawalpindi’s main bus terminals expressed frustration over the fare hikes. Several individuals reported that ticket prices had doubled compared to previous years, making it difficult for them to afford the journey. One passenger stated, “We wait all year to go home for Eid, but the fares are just too high this time.”
Transport operators have attributed the fare increases to rising fuel prices and operational costs. However, commuters argue that the hikes are excessive and have not been matched by any improvements in service or comfort. Some travelers also complained about the lack of government oversight, stating that authorities have not taken adequate measures to regulate fares or provide relief to the public during the festive season.
The fare hikes have not only affected those traveling to distant cities but also impacted short-distance commuters within the region. Many families who traditionally travel together for Eid have had to make alternative arrangements or cancel their trips altogether.
The situation has led to a noticeable decrease in the number of passengers at bus stations, with some transporters reporting lower bookings compared to previous years. The disruption has been particularly hard on migrant workers, who rely on these annual visits to maintain family ties and celebrate Eid with loved ones.
As the Eid holidays approach, many in Rawalpindi continue to hope for intervention from relevant authorities to address the issue of rising transport fares and ensure that the tradition of Eid homecoming can be preserved for all.
