New Zealand marks seven years since Christchurch mosque attacks

WELLINGTON: Remembrance events were held in Christchurch on Sunday to honour the victims of the 2019 mosque shootings, which remain New Zealand's deadliest mass shooting incident. The attacks, carried out on March 15, 2019, at the Al Noor Mosque and Linwood Islamic Centre, resulted in the deaths of 51 worshipers and left 40 others injured.

The day of commemoration began with the "Walk the Talk for Unity" at the Bridge of Remembrance in central Christchurch. This event was organised by the Sakinah Community Trust, a group established by several widows of the victims, according to a report by local broadcaster 1News.

A memorial service was also held at the Peace Bell in the city's botanical gardens. The ceremony started with a minute of silence, followed by the reading of the names of the 51 individuals who lost their lives in the attacks. The service concluded with the laying of wreaths in memory of the victims.

The attacks were perpetrated by Australian national Brenton Tarrant, who targeted worshipers during Friday prayers at both the Al Noor Mosque and Linwood Islamic Centre. Tarrant, identified as a white supremacist, was sentenced in 2020 to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.

The Christchurch mosque shootings had a profound impact on New Zealand and prompted widespread condemnation both domestically and internationally. The annual remembrance events serve as an opportunity for the community to come together in solidarity, reflect on the tragedy, and honour the memory of those who lost their lives.
