Khyber Pakhtunkhwa local governments complete four-year term

PESHAWAR: The four-year term of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s local governments is set to conclude today, marking the end of the tenure for elected representatives across the province.

According to details, the local government system in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, which was established following the 2021 elections, has reached the completion of its mandated duration. The tenure encompassed various tiers of local governance, including tehsil, village, and neighbourhood councils.

The Express Tribune reported that the expiration of the term will result in the dissolution of all local government bodies in the province. With the conclusion of their tenure, the elected representatives will no longer hold their respective offices.

Officials stated that, as per the law, the provincial government is now required to appoint administrators to oversee the affairs of local bodies until new elections are held. The process for the next phase of local government elections is expected to be initiated in accordance with relevant legal provisions.

The local government system in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa was introduced to devolve administrative and financial powers to the grassroots level. Over the past four years, elected representatives have been responsible for managing local development projects and addressing community issues.

The conclusion of the local governments’ term comes at a time when discussions regarding reforms and improvements in the local governance structure are ongoing. The provincial government is expected to announce further details regarding the appointment of administrators and the schedule for the upcoming elections in due course.
