ISLAMABAD: The National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra) has clarified that digital identity cards are legally equivalent to physical Computerised National Identity Cards (CNICs), and institutions must accept them as valid proof of identity.
In a statement issued on Friday, Nadra emphasized that citizens presenting digital CNICs should not be asked to produce physical copies. The authority warned all organizations and institutions against refusing to recognize the digital version of the national identity card.
Nadra stated, "Digital identity cards hold the same legal status as physical CNICs." The authority further cautioned that any institution declining to accept digital CNICs would be considered in violation of the law.
The move comes as part of Nadra's ongoing efforts to facilitate citizens through digital solutions, aiming to streamline processes and reduce reliance on physical documentation. The digital CNIC, accessible via Nadra's official application, is designed to offer convenience and security for users across Pakistan.
According to Nadra, the digital identity card is fully integrated with existing verification systems, ensuring that its authenticity can be confirmed in the same manner as the physical card. The authority urged all public and private sector entities to update their protocols accordingly and to recognize digital CNICs without hesitation.
Nadra reiterated its commitment to promoting digital transformation and enhancing service delivery for citizens. The authority encouraged individuals to utilize the digital CNIC option, highlighting its ease of use and accessibility.
This announcement is expected to address concerns raised by citizens who have faced difficulties when presenting digital CNICs at various institutions. Nadra's directive aims to eliminate confusion and ensure uniform acceptance of digital identity cards nationwide.
