Washington: An unidentified gunman was killed on Thursday following an exchange of gunfire with security personnel during an attack on the Temple Israel synagogue in West Bloomfield, located on the outskirts of Detroit, Michigan, according to police officials.
Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard told reporters that the incident occurred when at least one individual approached the synagogue. "Security saw him, engaged him in gunfire," Sheriff Bouchard stated. He further added, "Nobody at the moment has been confirmed to be hurt except potentially the shooter." Authorities are currently investigating whether more than one person was involved in the attack.
Following the incident, law enforcement officers responded swiftly, with a significant police presence reported in the area. The situation unfolded amid heightened tensions nationwide, which have been attributed to the ongoing US-Israeli war on Iran, as per police statements.
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer condemned the attack, expressing her concern for the local Jewish community. "This is heartbreaking," Governor Whitmer said. "Michigan’s Jewish community should be able to live and practice their faith in peace. Antisemitism and violence have no place in Michigan," she added.
At this stage, no injuries apart from the shooter have been confirmed by authorities. The identity of the gunman has not yet been released, and investigations into the motive and any possible accomplices are ongoing.
The Temple Israel synagogue is one of the prominent Jewish places of worship in the region. The attack has raised concerns about the safety of religious communities and the need for enhanced security measures at places of worship.
Law enforcement officials have assured the public that they are conducting a thorough investigation and will provide updates as more information becomes available.
