LAHORE / PESHAWAR / KARACHI: The recent sharp increase of Rs55 per litre in petrol and diesel prices has triggered widespread concern across Pakistan, compounding the financial strain on households already facing heightened inflation during Ramazan.
The timing and magnitude of the fuel price hike have drawn significant public criticism. Citizens from various backgrounds expressed frustration, with one respondent stating, “It was the last thing Pakistanis needed and the government delivered it mercilessly.” Another individual remarked, “Life itself is beginning to bite now, as making both ends meet has become an almost impossible struggle.”
The impact of the price hike is being felt most acutely by daily-wage earners and gig workers, who are struggling to cope with rising transportation and food costs. Within hours of the announcement, transport fares surged, and prices of vegetables and fruits also saw a noticeable jump. Transporters have defended the fare increases, stating that the hike was unavoidable given the higher fuel costs.
Traders and professionals have also voiced their dissatisfaction with the government’s handling of the situation, noting that the increase has deepened the economic challenges faced by many. The rise in transportation costs has led to a reduction in fuel consumption, as people are cutting back on travel to manage expenses.
The ripple effects of the fuel price hike are being felt nationwide, with inflationary pressures mounting during a period when many households are already under financial stress due to Ramazan-related expenses. The situation has added to the burden on consumers, particularly those with limited incomes, and has intensified calls for measures to address the growing cost of living.
