Punjab Assembly finance committee recommends amendment bills to enhance tax and infrastructure systems

LAHORE: The Punjab Assembly’s Standing Committee on Finance has unanimously recommended two significant amendment bills aimed at improving the province’s tax collection and infrastructure financing mechanisms.

The committee meeting, chaired by MPA Mohsin Ayub Khan, was held on Tuesday. Attendees included committee members Ms Riffat Abbasi, Tanveer Aslam, Falak Sher Awan, Faisal Akram, and Rana Muhammad Arshad. Representatives from the administrative department, officials from the law department, and members of the Assembly Secretariat were also present during the proceedings.

During the session, the committee reviewed two legislative proposals: the Punjab Sales Tax on Services (Amendment) Bill, 2026, and the Punjab Infrastructure Development Cess (Amendment) Bill, 2026. The first bill is designed to enable the relevant authority to carry out its procedural responsibilities more effectively under the sales tax regime on services. The second bill seeks to enhance the infrastructure-related tax system and aims to provide greater clarity in tax matters through comprehensive amendments.

According to officials present at the meeting, these legislative measures are intended to strengthen the overall tax framework of Punjab and ensure that infrastructure financing is more robust and transparent. The committee’s recommendations will now be forwarded for further legislative action in the Punjab Assembly.

The review and recommendation of these bills are part of ongoing efforts to modernize and streamline tax administration and infrastructure development in the province. The participation of various stakeholders, including administrative and legal experts, underscores the importance of these amendments in the broader context of fiscal management and development planning in Punjab.
