ISLAMABAD: Senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) informed the National Assembly Standing Committee on Overseas Pakistanis on Tuesday that the current situation in the Middle East does not warrant a mass evacuation of Pakistani nationals.
The head of the MoFA’s Crisis Management Cell provided a comprehensive briefing to the committee regarding the number of Pakistanis stranded in various Middle Eastern countries due to the ongoing conflict. The official also outlined the measures being taken to facilitate the repatriation of those affected.
The meeting, chaired by PPP MNA Syed Agha Rafiullah, saw committee members raise concerns about the significant increase in airline fares, with particular reference to Pakistan International Airlines (PIA). Members highlighted the financial burden this has placed on Pakistanis seeking to return home.
During the session, the ministry official acknowledged that Pakistani nationals in several countries were experiencing fuel shortages and transport challenges. The lack of public transport has further complicated their situation, making it more difficult for them to move or return.
The official noted, “Gulf missions reported large registered populations but comp,” though the statement was not completed in the available report. The ministry assured the committee that it is closely monitoring the situation and remains engaged with Pakistani missions in the region to provide necessary assistance.
Committee members emphasized the importance of continued support for overseas Pakistanis and urged the ministry to address the issues related to travel and repatriation promptly.
