Foreigner begging in Islamabad learns Pakistan is not a travel sponsor
A foreign traveler in Islamabad has ignited a debate online after being filmed begging at a traffic signal. The incident raises questions about 'begpacking' and ethical travel.

A video circulating on social media shows a young foreign national walking between cars at a traffic signal in Islamabad, holding an Urdu placard that reads:
“Main Europe say aik adventure musafir hun. Main paison k baghair safar kar raha hun. Meri madad karain.”
Translated, he describes himself as a European adventure traveler journeying without money and asking for help.
In the clip, he can be seen approaching vehicles as they stop at the red light, holding up the sign to drivers, similar to how street beggars typically seek assistance at signals in major cities, however, no one reaches out to hand him any money.
The video has quickly sparked debate online, with many users calling it an example of “begpacking” — a term used for foreign tourists who fund their travels by asking locals for donations. Southeast and South Asian countries like Thailand, India, and Indonesia have previously dealt with similar cases.
But this is the internet. So of course, the comment section took a turn.
One user joked, “Shaheen Afridi hai yeh tou,” comparing the young man to the Pakistani cricketer.
Another wrote, “Steve kia karraha h yahan?” saying he resembled Steve from Stranger Things.
A third was convinced it was a Hollywood crossover episode, commenting, “Mujha to Andrew Garfield laga.”
Some took a more experimental view of the situation. “He’s probably doing an experiment to check how we react,” one user suggested.
And then came the classic line dripping in sarcasm: “Pakistan taraki kar gaya hai shayad.”
While some found the situation amusing, others questioned the ethics of traveling across continents without financial planning and then relying on public generosity, especially in a country facing its own economic challenges.
