CII chairman highlights distinction between Zakat and Sadaqa, urges careful distribution

ISLAMABAD: The Chairman of the Council of Islamic Ideology (CII), Dr Raghib Naeemi, has called on the public to ensure that Zakat is distributed to those who are truly eligible, emphasizing the importance of understanding the difference between Zakat and Sadaqa.

According to Dr Naeemi, Zakat is a mandatory form of charity in Islam, while Sadaqa is voluntary. He explained that Zakat must be given to specific categories of people as outlined in Islamic teachings, and it is essential for donors to verify that their contributions reach those who are entitled to receive them.

Dr Naeemi stated, “Zakat is obligatory and must be given to the deserving, while Sadaqa is voluntary and can be given to anyone in need.” He further clarified that the eligibility criteria for Zakat recipients are clearly defined in Islamic law, and donors should be mindful of these requirements when making their contributions.

The CII chairman also urged individuals and organizations involved in collecting and distributing Zakat to exercise diligence and transparency. He highlighted the need for proper mechanisms to ensure that Zakat funds are not misused and reach the intended beneficiaries.

Dr Naeemi’s remarks come at a time when charitable giving increases during the holy month of Ramadan. He encouraged the public to seek guidance if they are unsure about the rules governing Zakat and Sadaqa, and to prioritize the needs of the most vulnerable members of society.

He concluded by stressing the spiritual and social significance of Zakat, noting that its correct distribution plays a vital role in supporting the underprivileged and promoting social justice.
