Lahore High Court orders Punjab government to protect Murree Brewery ruins

LAHORE: The Lahore High Court has instructed the Punjab government to take immediate measures to preserve and safeguard the historic ruins of the Murree Brewery located at Ghora Gali. The directive was issued by Justice Malik Awais Khalid while hearing a public interest petition filed by Sardar Aftab Ishaq Khan, a resident of the area.

The petitioner argued that the authorities had not fulfilled their legal obligations under the Antiquities Act 1975 to protect the remnants of the Murree Brewery. He maintained that the ruins, situated in Ghora Gali, tehsil Murree, qualify as an immovable architectural antiquity under the law. According to the petitioner, these remains are significant as they represent nearly two centuries of colonial-era architecture and are linked to the early development of Murree as a tourist destination.

Justice Malik Awais Khalid, in his order, highlighted the importance of ancient monuments, stating that they possess considerable historical, cultural, and national value. The court accepted the petition and directed the provincial government to ensure the preservation and protection of the site.

The Murree Brewery, established during the colonial period, is recognized for its architectural and historical significance. The court's decision underscores the need for governmental action to safeguard such heritage sites for future generations.

The district administration informed the court regarding the current status of the site during the proceedings. However, the court emphasized that more proactive steps are necessary to fulfill the legal requirements for the conservation of the ruins.

The ruling is seen as a move to reinforce the implementation of heritage protection laws and to promote the preservation of sites that reflect the country's diverse historical legacy.
