NEW DELHI – Tens of thousands of cricket enthusiasts filled the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday, while millions more across India tuned in to watch the T20 World Cup final, hoping to witness a historic victory on home soil.
The final match sees India facing New Zealand, with the hosts aiming to become the first team to retain the T20 World Cup trophy, the first to win it at home, and the first to secure a third T20 world title. The month-long tournament, featuring 55 matches and 20 teams, culminates at the 130,000-seat stadium, which is recognized as the world’s largest cricket venue.
Supporters from various parts of the country travelled long distances to be part of the event. Many fans arrived dressed in Indian team colours and waved the national tricolour flag as the match commenced. Among them was Anil, an 18-year-old wedding photographer from Hyderabad, who journeyed 1,200 kilometres by train with his brother. "I hope India wins," he said.
The excitement was also evident outside the stadium, where hundreds of vendors, all wearing Indian jerseys, lined the streets to cater to the influx of fans. The atmosphere reflected the immense passion for cricket in India, with the nation coming to a virtual standstill as the final got underway.
The T20 World Cup has captured the attention of the country, with expectations running high for a memorable finish. The outcome of the match will determine whether India can achieve a series of historic firsts in the sport.
