Xi, Chinese leaders attend opening of 14th CPPCC annual session

BEIJING: Xi Jinping and other Chinese leaders attended the opening meeting of the fourth session of the 14th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) in Beijing on Wednesday, marking the commencement of the country’s top political advisory body’s annual gathering, according to Chinese state media reports.

The meeting was held at the Great Hall of the People, where national political advisors convened to deliberate on key policy directions and development priorities for the year ahead.

The CPPCC National Committee, an important institution of multiparty cooperation and political consultation under the leadership of the Communist Party of China (CPC), plays a vital role in advancing whole-process people’s democracy and promoting national governance through consultation, consensus-building, and participation in state affairs.

Chinese leaders including members of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee were present at the opening meeting, underscoring the significance attached to the annual session, which runs in parallel with the National People’s Congress (NPC) meetings as part of China’s “Two Sessions.”

The agenda for the session was reviewed and approved at the opening meeting, setting the framework for discussions and deliberations during the gathering.

Wang Huning, chairman of the CPPCC National Committee, delivered a work report on behalf of the Standing Committee of the CPPCC National Committee. In his report, Wang reviewed the achievements and major tasks undertaken over the past year and outlined key priorities for the upcoming period.

According to Chinese media coverage, Wang emphasized the CPPCC’s role in strengthening ideological and political consensus, enhancing consultative democracy, and contributing wisdom and strength to China’s modernization drive. He highlighted efforts to focus on central tasks, serve the overall interests of the country, and promote high-quality development.

The report also stressed adherence to the guidance of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era and reaffirmed the CPPCC’s commitment to upholding the leadership of the Communist Party of China while expanding participation from various sectors of society.

Political advisors attending the session represent a broad spectrum of Chinese society, including representatives from non-Communist parties, people’s organizations, ethnic minorities, and various sectors such as economy, education, science, and culture. During the session, members are expected to submit proposals, engage in consultations, and offer recommendations on major national and social issues.

The annual CPPCC session is regarded as a key platform for political consultation, democratic supervision, and participation in the deliberation of state affairs, contributing to China’s policy-making process and long-term development strategies.
