Punjab CM Highlights Reforms for Wildlife Protection on World Wildlife Day

LAHORE: Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has emphasized the vital role of wildlife in preserving biodiversity and ecological balance, expressing satisfaction with the steps her administration has taken for wildlife protection, conservation, and promotion. Speaking on Tuesday in connection with World Wildlife Day, the chief minister outlined several initiatives introduced by the Punjab government to safeguard wildlife across the province.

According to official statements, the Punjab government has enacted innovative reforms aimed at curbing illegal hunting and the unlawful possession of wild animals. These reforms include amendments to the Punjab Wildlife Act 1974 and the Protected Areas Act. The chief minister noted that these legislative changes are designed to strengthen the legal framework for wildlife conservation.

Maryam Nawaz also announced that the Wildlife Helpline 1107 has been made fully operational, providing the public with a direct channel to report wildlife-related concerns. Additionally, she highlighted the introduction of online facilities for obtaining shooting licences, import and export permits, hunting permits, and registration of breeding farms. These digital services are intended to streamline processes and enhance transparency in wildlife management.

For the first time in Punjab, an artificial intelligence-based animal census system has been implemented to improve data collection and monitoring. Furthermore, GPS and collar tracker systems have been introduced to track rescued animals, enabling better oversight and protection.

At the Lahore Safari Zoo, new features such as a 3D screen and animal sculptures have been installed, along with other modern amenities, to enhance visitor experience and promote awareness about wildlife conservation.

The chief minister reiterated her administration's commitment to the protection and promotion of wildlife, stating that these measures reflect the government's dedication to maintaining ecological balance and supporting biodiversity in the province.
