The European Union has declared its full support for Spain following threats from US President Donald Trump to sever trade ties with Madrid. The dispute arose after Spain refused to support Washington’s actions against Iran and denied the US military use of its Rota and Moron air bases.
EU Affirms Solidarity With Spain
European Council President Antonio Costa stated on Wednesday that he had spoken with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez to convey the EU’s solidarity. “I have just held a call with President Sanchez to express the EU’s full solidarity with Spain. The EU will always ensure that the interests of its member states are fully protected,” Costa said on the social media platform X.
The European Commission also indicated its readiness to defend the interests of the EU and its member states. The Commission emphasized its commitment to standing with all EU citizens and member countries.
Trump Criticizes Spain’s Stance
On Tuesday, President Trump criticized the Spanish government for declining to allow US access to the Rota and Moron air bases. He also reproached Spain for not joining other NATO allies in a pledge to increase defense spending. “So we’re going to cut off all trade with Spain. We don’t want anything to do with Spain,” Trump said, familiar with the matter.
Spanish officials have responded by asserting that they will not be “vassals” and reaffirmed their position regarding the use of their military bases and their stance on the US approach to Iran.
EU Prepares to Defend Member Interests
In response to the escalating rhetoric, the European Commission reiterated its preparedness to safeguard the interests of the EU and its member states. Officials said the EU stands in full solidarity with Spain and will act to protect the rights and interests of all member countries.
The situation remains tense as both sides maintain their positions. Further developments are expected as diplomatic discussions continue.
