Ukraine Nears Completion of Technical Steps for EU Accession Talks

Ukraine is set to finalize the technical requirements necessary to begin negotiations on all aspects of its European Union accession process within the coming days, President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on Monday.

Speaking to reporters via a WhatsApp media chat, President Zelensky emphasized Ukraine's readiness to move forward with the EU accession process. He reiterated his appeal to European Union partners to establish a definitive date for Ukraine's entry into the bloc, stating that such a commitment would serve as a crucial assurance for the country's future security as it continues discussions with Moscow to resolve the ongoing conflict.

“We are ready, but not all leaders of the European Union are… I mean, not everyone is ready to give Ukraine this opportunity,” Zelensky said.

Ukraine was granted formal EU candidate status shortly after Russia's invasion in February 2022. However, the country's advancement through the established EU accession process has encountered obstacles. Reports indicate that Hungary has blocked the unanimous approval required to formally open each of the six accession "clusters"—the thematic areas that must be addressed during negotiations.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has maintained his country's position, which has prevented the formal commencement of talks on these clusters. This stance has contributed to delays in Ukraine's progress toward EU membership, despite Kyiv's stated readiness to proceed.

President Zelensky's latest remarks highlight ongoing divisions within the European Union regarding Ukraine's accession. While Ukraine has completed much of the preparatory work, the lack of consensus among EU member states, particularly Hungary's opposition, continues to pose a significant barrier.

As Ukraine prepares to complete the remaining technical steps, the timeline for the start of formal accession negotiations remains uncertain, pending agreement among all EU members.
