Pakistan, Philippines explore broader trade, investment cooperation at Joint Commission Meeting

MANILA: Pakistan and the Philippines on Friday discussed expanding trade and investment ties, strengthening cooperation in agriculture, energy, and minerals, and easing business travel during talks held in Manila, a spokesperson for Pakistan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs said.

The discussions took place during the second session of the Pakistan–Philippines Joint Economic Commission, where both sides reviewed avenues to deepen commercial engagement and institutional collaboration.

Officials considered organising trade exhibitions and launching a dedicated business forum to enhance commercial linkages. They also examined updating the existing bilateral Double Taxation Agreement to bring it in line with modern international standards, while stressing the importance of greater private sector participation. In this regard, both sides supported reviving the Pakistan–Philippines Joint Business Council.

Pakistan proposed signing a memorandum of understanding between the two countries’ investment boards and discussed the establishment of a joint working group on investment to facilitate structured collaboration.

Export opportunities in agricultural commodities and halal-certified products were highlighted as promising areas of growth. The two sides also explored cooperation in seed development and irrigation initiatives to strengthen agricultural productivity.

In the energy and minerals sectors, discussions focused on upstream exploration and the exchange of mining technology. Both delegations underscored the importance of a predictable and efficient visa regime to facilitate smoother business travel and people-to-people contacts.

The meeting was co-chaired by Pakistan’s Secretary of Economic Affairs Muhammad Humair Karim and the Philippines’ Undersecretary for International Trade Allan B. Gepty.

Pakistan’s Ambassador to the Philippines, Dr Asma Rabbani, and the Philippines’ Ambassador to Pakistan, Dr Emmanuel Fernandez, along with senior officials from both countries, also attended the session, the spokesperson added.
