Munir arrives in London on maiden UK visit
LONDON/ISLAMABAD: Gen. Syed Asim Munir has arrived in the United Kingdom on a five-day visit, apparently at the invitation of Britain's Ministry of Defence.
The visit, which begins Monday, is expected to focus on discussions around strategic issues, and is seen by many as highly significant due to the rising wave of Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) violence and the current state of affairs in South Asia.
This marks Munir's first visit to the UK since he took over as the army chief in November of last year. He is accompanied by senior military commanders during the trip.
He is also expected to address the fifth joint UK-Pakistan Stabilisation Conference at Wilton Park, an executive agency created by the UK Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office, between February 5-8.
The conference, co-hosted by UK Army Chief Gen. Patrick Sanders, will focus on "Regional stability in South Asia: the return of geopolitics and other challenges," and will also consider the impact of the Ukraine war on the EU, UK, and Pakistan.
During his visit, Munir will also visit the headquarters of the British military, where he will address senior military commanders, including Sanders.
He is also expected to address a security think-tank towards the end of his visit.
The high-level visit is being viewed as crucial by both nations, and is expected to have far-reaching implications for the region.
