Senate resolution condemns wave of terrorist violence in Balochistan, calls for probe

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Senate on Monday unanimously approved a resolution censuring the recent terrorist incidents in Balochistan and pressing for an open, time bound and decisive inquiry into what occurred.

Through the motion, lawmakers asked the authorities to ensure that everyone linked to the violence, including attackers, facilitators and any local or foreign sponsors, is prosecuted in line with the law. The House also emphasised closer coordination between federal and provincial institutions on intelligence sharing, stronger border controls and more effective counter terrorism arrangements, with Balochistan identified as a priority.

Members expressed sympathy with the families of those who lost their lives and commended the role of security forces and law enforcement personnel.

The resolution restated the country’s determination to overcome terrorism and included the declaration: “The unity of the state and the will of the people will prevail over all forces of violence, extremism, and terrorism.”

The document also reiterated support for peace, development and political participation in Balochistan, observing that enduring security depends on socio economic advancement, sound governance and adherence to constitutional rights.

Earlier, the military’s media wing had reported that security forces killed 92 terrorists on Saturday while countering coordinated assaults by banned outfits in parts of Quetta and nearly a dozen other towns and cities across the province.

Inter Services Public Relations said the attackers were affiliated with Indian sponsored Fitna al Hindustan and carried out multiple acts of violence in Quetta, Mastung, Nushki, Dalbandin, Kharan, Panjgur, Tump, Gwadar and Pasni with the aim of disturbing peace in the area.

Authorities have labelled certain Balochistan based militant groups as Fitna al Hindustan to underline what they describe as India’s involvement in destabilisation and terrorism in Pakistan.

According to ISPR, the assaults were directed by foreign handlers to disrupt daily life and development work in the province. It said 15 security personnel were martyred during the response and 18 civilians also died.

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi had previously attributed responsibility for the attacks to India.

While speaking to reporters alongside Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti on Saturday night, he said the attackers were not ordinary militants and alleged that India had planned the incidents with them.

He said the authorities would pursue all those responsible as well as those directing them.
