ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf President Chaudhry Parvez Elahi on Sunday said the appointment of Mehmood Khan Achakzai as Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly would prove to be a positive development for the democratic process.
The former Punjab chief minister congratulated Achakzai during a telephone conversation, describing him as a senior and dignified politician. He expressed confidence that, under Achakzai’s leadership, the opposition would play a constructive and effective role in parliamentary proceedings.
Parvez Elahi said a strong opposition was essential for democratic stability and hoped the House would witness meaningful debate and accountability.
Earlier, National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq issued the official notification appointing Mehmood Khan Achakzai as Leader of the Opposition.
The position fell vacant following the disqualification of Omar Ayub, after which PTI founder Imran Khan nominated Achakzai for the role. However, the speaker had maintained that the notification could not be issued while the matter remained under judicial consideration.
After Omar Ayub withdrew his petition, the speaker formally notified Mehmood Khan Achakzai as Leader of the Opposition, clearing the way for the opposition benches to resume leadership in the National Assembly.
