LAHORE: Lahore’s Orange Line Metro Train has recorded more than 270 million passenger journeys since becoming operational in 2020, marking a major milestone for Pakistan’s first metro rail system, according to a performance report released by the Orange Line management.
The report said the mass transit system now serves over 250,000 commuters daily, offering a dependable alternative to congested road travel and significantly reducing travel time across the city.
Spanning 27 kilometres with 26 stations, the Orange Line connects major residential, commercial and educational hubs from Dera Gujran to Ali Town, enabling affordable and efficient mobility for hundreds of thousands of passengers each day.
Ridership has grown steadily since the project’s inauguration in October 2020. The metro carried around 50 million passengers in its first two years, crossed the 100 million mark by mid-2023 and surpassed 200 million journeys by late 2024, reflecting sustained public reliance on the system.
According to the report, the Orange Line has completed more than 512,000 trips over five years while maintaining a punctuality rate of about 99 percent. Dedicated tracks, automated signalling and modern rolling stock have helped ensure consistent service and reduced journey times compared to conventional road transport.
Passenger facilities include air-conditioned trains, clean stations, elevators, escalators and real-time information systems, making the service accessible to women, elderly commuters and persons with disabilities.
Beyond transport efficiency, the project has also contributed to the local economy by generating over 2,000 jobs and supporting skills development, reinforcing its role in transforming Lahore’s urban mobility landscape.
