ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has postponed local government elections in Islamabad after withdrawing the previously announced election schedule, citing changes introduced through a new local government ordinance.
In a notification issued on Tuesday, the ECP said the election schedule had been withdrawn following the promulgation of the Islamabad Local Government (Amendment) Ordinance, which altered the structure and mode of the local government system in the federal capital.
The commission stated that the amendments had changed the framework under which local government elections are to be conducted, making it necessary to halt the existing electoral process until the revised legal framework is fully examined and implemented.
The Islamabad Local Government (Amendment) Ordinance was promulgated on January 10, reshaping the local government setup in the capital and triggering procedural changes in the electoral mechanism.
Earlier, the ECP had announced that local government elections in Islamabad would be held on February 15. However, with the withdrawal of the schedule, the polls now stand postponed until further notice.
The election watchdog has not yet announced a revised timeline for the local government elections, saying the matter will be taken up once the legal and administrative implications of the new ordinance are addressed.
